In 1989, when hair bands reigned supreme, and Grunge was still something you wiped off your shoe, Kickin’ Edgar was formed in Atlanta, GA. Made up of four fraternity brothers attending Georgia State University, the group never thought they would still be playing together almost 30 years later.

No, Kickin’ Edgar is not in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame…yet, but they’ve vacationed there, they’ve played many songs written by Hall of Famers, and they’ve lasted a lot longer than Disco…or Grunge for that matter. Kickin’ Edgar thoroughly embraced the Athens/Atlanta alternative scene during their early years, taking cues from local artists REM, Pylon, Drivin’ n Cryin’, the B-52s, Michele Malone and the Indigo Girls.

They cut their teeth on the Atlanta bar scene: 3rd Street Pub, Good Ol’ Days, Bash Rip Rocks, the Point, and many others. Remember those Atlanta natives? Later, Kickin’ Edgar toured the college circuit across the southeastern US playing fraternity parties, dive bars, and (once) even the Montgomery Museum of Natural History – weird!

Kickin’ Edgar released a self-titled EP in 1990, which they are considering re-mastering and re-releasing for their 30th anniversary in 2019. Much more recently the band released their first full album of original material since the Kickin’ Edgar EP. The new album, “Welcome to Loserville,” was recorded at two of the most famous studios in Atlanta: Southern Tracks and Doppler Studios. It was produced by Ben Holst and features a variety of country, blues, pop, and, of course, rock n’ roll tracks, showcasing the band’s maturity as musicians. They’ve come a long way since those early alternative days.

What’s next for the boys of KE? Currently they are working on releasing a series of videos in support of “Welcome to Loserville” as well as working on new songs for their next (as yet untitled) project – this one to be recorded in singer Neal Weaver’s home. A release date isn’t scheduled yet, but the guys hope to have it completed sometime in 2018. With influences ranging from AC/DC and Brian Setzer to Johnny Cash and Tom Petty the new project promises to be just as surprising as the previous two.
